Just Right Books

I really want to focus at the beginning of this year on teaching my students how to find "just right" books. Does anyone have any great ideas on how to teach this? Also, any ideas for a bulletin board displaying this information. I appreciate the help!

Just recently some one told me this at a workshop and I thought it was a cute idea of how to explain it to the kids....They have 3 pairs of shoes. One very large one, one that fits you (the teacher), and borrow one of the kids.

You then try each shoe on and show the kids that the little one and big one are obviously not right for you and you have your "just right book". She then told her class that they should read the first few sentences and count how many mistakes they had to see if the book was just right.

I teach first grade and tell the kids about the 5 finger rule. Hold up one finger for each word missed while reading the first page (or 2 if 1st pg. is really short). If you hold up 5 or more fingers, the book is too hard. If you hold up no fingers it's too easy.

You need to get this book:

Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians by: Jackie Mims Hopkins

http://www.amazon.com/Goldie-Socks-L...8216440&sr=8-1

It teaches kids how to choose a "just-right" book!

Goldisocks and the Three Libearians is a great book for teaching choosing the "just right" books. My librarian has used it for a couple years and has ordered all of second grade the book marks and posters that go along with it. Very good book!

If you don't have money to buy the before mentioned book you can also use the Three BEars story and we called this the Goldilocks method. I fyou do a search there are some wonderful book marks for choosing just right books.

I've also heard about people using t-shirts, but I really like the shoe idea as well

There are some bookmarks you can print at busyteacherscafe.com. They are in the reading section of the free printables.

I just made a poster for finding the just right book and using the five finger rule. If you like, I can send you the attachment via email. I just don't know how to attach it onto here. Sorry!

I also do a lesson similar to the one with the shoes, but use T-shirts. I love the shoe idea, though, and might do that one instead! I have a toddler T, a kid-sized T, and an adult XL to demonstrate on a student. (It's hilarious when I pull out the toddler T and my demonstrator thinks they have to try to put it on!) We also discuss Goldilocks and I have a poster with that rule up in my room. We also talk about the 5-finger rule because that one is easy to implement when they are in the library.
