I created a place value caterpillar. To use, each piece is attached and made to look like a caterpillar. Mine goes from hundred thousands to thousandths. I will print it on colored paper to make it nicer. I wish I could find a picture of these somewhere to illustrate how it is used. Each piece is a different file, so it will take several messages. I hope someone is able to get a use from it!
Yay! I love it. I am planning to change my math bulletin board with every unit this year and while I loved my idea for my place value bulletin board, it was going to take a long time to prepare. This is cute and exactly what I need! Thanks.
You are the greatest! I read your idea on the 3rd grade board earlier and have been thinking about it every since. Then I log in tonight and see that you have posted the files. Thank you so much!
thanks. it's way better than the one i've been using in fifth grade - much better for third graders. guess i'll give the new fifth grade teacher my old one!
You are incredible sam! I'm going to print it out just because. Too bad first graders don't get past ones, tens and hundreds. But I can just use that part and save the rest in case I ever get to change grades. Thanks so much!
Totally agree with the perfect timing...seems to be the consistent factor in our scope and sequences. The other math teacher and I were just discussing place value posters and pocket charts today as we were setting our rooms up (how what we had was not that great). Thank you so much for your creativity, time, and willingness to share! I'm also sending you a PM.
Adorable!! Thank you very much for sharing! This is much better than the boring old chart I have in my classroom...I'm going to change it out right away!
I have been wanting something visual to use with my kids to teach place value, and just haven't found the right thing. I think your caterpillar just might be what I'm looking for. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
Fabulous! I printed each section on colored cardstock, repeating the colors every three places, and used a fourth color for the commas and decimal point, so the kids will be able to see the patterns. I added a googly eye, and he looks great displayed on my wall. Thank you so much!
This is great, thank you! I try and find a variety of ways to show place value and this will be just the thing that will get my student's attention. I too am sorry I only have to use up to the hundreds in grade 2 but they will love it. Thank you so much.
I have posted my idea somewhere else about my cookie sheet place value using coins to count the days until 100's day. Example: ones are pennies which are added each day, when we get 10 they put a dime in the tens and remove the pennies and we continue every day until we reach $1.00 and celebrate 100's day. (I put magnetic tape on the coins so they will attach to the cookie sheet.
I'm definitely using this on Monday. We reviewed the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands and "place/position." I'm going to add a place every week and (thank you!) a themed board for the month of September! Place value seems to be on all our minds!
