Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello! I teach 5th grade and I am interested in having my students to complete a community service project. I would like to have something unique and fun. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tammy

We've done a lot with our school and then again for 4-H...
*baby food drive (United Way)
*sock drive (local homeless shelter)
*coins
*canned dog/cat food (for local shelter) my kids really got into this one, they made posters and decorated boxes to hold the cans
*back to school supplies
*blankets/coats
*The Giving Tree (at Christmas our teachers pick a needy family to provide support for Christmas--toys, clothes, dinner etc) your kids might want to adopt a family or child in your school (ask your counselor to handle making the arrangements with the parents first) ours does this and posts the families in her office with sizes etc.

Our kids make lunch for community workers. The younger kids decorate lunch bags and the older ones make sandwiches, etc. All grades (120 K-8 kids in school) make cards or contribute in some way. The lunches get delivered by the kids to the local police station, jail, firestation, post office, etc. which are all within walking distance of the school. Kids decide where the lunches should go. We have a military base nearby and some kids delivered lunches to the flightline crew. Great community relations project and all levels of school get to participate.

My 5th graders have done a blanket and food drive for our local no-kill animal shelter. It was a huge hit and our principal decided to make it a school wide activity.
