2nd grade writing

I was hoping someone could share with me a typical second grade writing sample. I think my students should be able to write more/better than they do. Can your students write a story with a beg. middle, end? Is there a program you use that you really like? This is one area I want to improve this year in my own teaching as well as their ability. Thanks
K

Looking at this website, I find it to be too easy. I teach 2nd grade and by the end of the year they can write what this article says a 4th grader should be able to do. The examples are too simple, especially for 2nd grade.

I have just finished grading some writing projects. I will type in their story just as they wrote it below. The samples are from two different children.

This entry is about a mad scientist.

" A mad scientist will make
Frankinstin and a pich fork. To rule
the world. And he lives in a
mansion. A spookey house he has
50,000,000,000 eyeballs. The pich
fork is magic. The mansion was
cool. Because it was vary asom.
And it was VAREY SCARY and it
blouup. And then he was DEAD."

This entry is about their favorite desserts.

" My favorite desserts are Ice cream, mufins, cookies
I like ice cream because
it is cold and sweet. I like
mufins.
They are soft and mufiny
whene they are cooked. I like
cookies because they are soft and
crunchy. When I think aboute
food I am hungry and happy. I
like food because it is good but it
is also tasty."

We are just starting with the 4-Square method. They had to have a topic sentence and two sentences in each box. I know this isn't much but I've got a bunch of struggling writers. By the end of second grade they can write a whole page. Good luck, I hope this helps.

levels

I was thinking that the levels on the continuum aren't necessarily grade level equivalent. There are 12 levels for k-8, so a level 2 doesn't mean second grade.

My school district uses Mary Lewis writing. Here is a sample benchmark for narrative writing for 1st and 2nd grades. I will try to type the expository benchmark we were given and attach on here tomorrow..

expository activity

OUr trainer gave us this expository activity using the 1st grade expository benchmark. I teach 2nd so this is a great review in the beginning of the year. Students work in groups at their tables to put the sentence strips together to complete a paragraph. They love it! By following this writing frame, our 4th grade state writing test scores have gone up...
Hope this give you some ideas!

For narrative we start by mapping stories and videos (berenstein bears and arthur are great). THis helps them realize you need to identify the problem and have at least 2 attempts to solve before the problem is solved....
