Vocabulary Parade

First I want to say that I'm new to this site. This is my 2nd full year of teaching 5th grade (I'm a career changer). I love teaching, hate all the administrative paperwork.

On Halloween our school is having a vocabulary parade. The students are to dress up as a vocabulary word (and to have the word and meaning on them as a sign or something). Teachers are also to dress up. The words must be 5th grade level for my class. Any ideas for me? (A fellow teacher is dressing as leisure - golf attire...)

Have you read the book Miss Alaneus? It may give you an idea or two.

I dressed up as geometry. I dressed in brown pants, green sweatsh irt, put leaves, and paper geometry shapes all over me. Get it- Gee-I-am-a- tree. One of my students hung dollar bills from his ears with paperclips and was a buccaneer. Another teacher wore pictures all over her and was a collage.

I have never heard of this and it sounds like so much fun! Is this something you do in lieu of Halloween costumes?

At my school we still have Halloween parties and the kids can still wear their Halloween costumes. Yes, we still have Christmas parties instead of "Winter Festivals".

My daughter...4th grade...has been assigned the word "uneasy" for her costume. I am stumped! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

some tough vocab! I love it and have e mailed my principal to get permission to do it. We are not allowed to dress up for Halloween, as a matter of fact we don't celebrate it, but all classes have a fall celebration that day! Anyway I have a few questions.....
Do you do literal meaning of all words, or let them do literal or silly as they choose?
Do they do it all at home or work on it at school? We have poor response when it comes to doing stuff at home.
Do you let them chose the word or assign and if they choose, do they know the meaning of tougher words first?
I really want to do this and have it be successful so please excuse all of the questions. I went to the link above and it answered many questions, but I have many more!
Thanks!

Grade level costumes

Thanks for this wonderful idea! Each year our school has a storybook parade; students are required to dress as a character from a book. This year, they have thrown down the challenge to teachers ~ dress as a grade level. I'm always one to join in, but I was worried that one teacher on my team wouldn't be as enthusiastic. We are departmentalized, so I approached him with the "parallel" idea, shown in the slide show referenced by a PP (he is the Math/PE teacher). He is game! I'm very excited. Now I just have to settle on a Science term, while our third team member will choose a Literary term.

Thanks again.
