Help with Molly's Pilgrim

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am going to read this book to my class. I really liked idea someone had on PT, but can't find it. It said that after reading the book, the students took home a paper doll to cut out and decorate according to their own heritage.

Then they were to answer some questions (this is the part I need help with)...

ie) 1. What country do your ancestors come from?
2. Why did they leave?
3. How did they get here (boat, plane, etc)?
4. What foods did they eat?

?? Anyone else do this or have anything I can add to it? I teach 2nd grade.

Thank you for posting this great idea. I love it for our social studies classes!

I am wondering, though, what you use for a tagboard doll? Is it just a paper doll pattern?

Thanks so much~!!

Do you have a template for the doll that the children are supposed to make or is it however they want it to be?
Thanks.

Different Molly's Pilgrim doll

I have the students take home a round wooden clothespin to make the doll. (You can get stands for them at craft stores if you want to display them standing up.) The round top works great for the head, and I show them examples of how to use toothpicks or pipe cleaners for arms. They take them home to "dress" with craft supplies.
I display them on a bulletin board covered with a world map with the words, "We are all Pilgrims." They write a short paragraph about their ancestry that is posted next to their doll.
