Rich vocabulary words
Old 11-20-2008, 06:37 PM

Im trying to get my students to enhance their writing with rich vocab words...replacing words like "fun" and "cool" with really great, colorful words. Does anyone know of a good website that has a list of these i could pass out for their reference?

Thanks!

Try PMing her, if I remember right, she was compiling a dictionary style list this summer. I'll attach some lists I got from PT this summer.

Word Power

A few years ago I had a small group of 5th graders that were really good at spelling and good writers. I offered to let their spelling list be the Word Power lists in the Reader's Digest. They used the words in their compositions and in conversations going down the hallway. It was amusing because many adults didn't know the meaning of some of the words they were using.

Fancy Nancy

On a whim, I read one of the Fancy Nancy books to my class. They loved it. A few days later, at our school book fair, one of the boys pointed out the Fancy Nancy A to Z book. We read it, and I asked each of them which of her words they might try to use. "Ooh-la-la" was the favorite that day. We have since made a "Fancy Nancy" word chart, adding to it from read alouds and independent reading books. The list has now grown to 3 full pages of chart paper! During a writing activity last week, one of my weaker writers, a macho, tough guy, said that his piece had 7 Fancy Nancy words! Others took this as a challenge. You never know where an inspiration will come from! (I think we have read all of her books now.)

Strong Words!

Not quite sure what the grade level of your students is, but my fourth and fifth graders love Roald Dahl books. He uses such descriptive writing and they love that they are COOL words! We made a large WILLY WONKA'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF WILD WACKY WORDS wall...and we recorded all sorts of words from his book. Then they were encouraged to use them in their writing. They also found other words in other places because they knew they could add them to the list on the wall. There is a book that I have used to get ideas from; it is a GREAT book. It's called RAZZLE DAZZLE WRITING. I can' recall the author's name right now! Hope this helps!

Wow, these resources you've shared are awesome. I teach a gifted/high ability 4th grade class but we do above-grade level work. I have found that writing is especially a challenge this year with this group. They are producing multiple paragraph compositions but the word choices are pitiful. I will begin with these resources TOMORROW!! Thanks!!

NeeCee,
This list is fabulous! My teaching partner and I are trying to motivate our students to refresh their word lists and expand their vocabulary. Thanks so much for your help!
