"My Friend Martin" video

I know lots of people probably did MLK activities last week, but if you can hunt down the video "My Friend Martin" to show to your kids, I HIGHLY recommend it!

It is a bit long (over an hour), but it's a mix of animation and actual black and white archival video footage. Also, many famous actors lent their voices to the video: Susan Sarandon, Whoopie Goldberg, LaVar Burton...

Every year my kids are mezmorized by it and it inspires them to ask lots of insightful questions.

Our school shows it every year over the closed circuit, and the kids love it! My kids actually cheered when it came on. They were shocked by how life was, and even asked me if MLK's home was actually bombed. When I told them it was, I think they were ready to take their own time machine and go back there to smack some people around! I'm in metro Atlanta, plus my school is majority African American, but many of my kids don't have an accurate picture of MLK. (They spend a lot of time talking about the war between blacks and whites, and I try to focus on how MLK talked about non-violence and freedom for all.) This movie really helps them see that both blacks and whites worked together for freedom.

I show this movie every year and then I take it home and we watch it as a family. My kindergarten son was appalled that children were being sprayed with hoses.

It is a good movie to get kids to understand how the world was changed as a result of Martin's work.

BTW, the title of the movie is Our Friend Martin, just in case anyone is searching for it. I got my copy for 50 cents at the library book sale!

Just to let you know that video/DVD seems to have been discontinued. If you go to Amazon the DVD now costs over $100 and the VHS over $50!!!! So you better "hang on to what you got" !!!

for the correction on the title.

I don't own my own personal copy; it belongs to our library. I would LOVE to find a copy at the Dollar Store!! Lucky you!

I, too, love that video! Every year I show it and the kids are in awe. They gasp when they hear the word "negro", but it leads into a great discussion. I explain that it wasn't considered as derogatory as the other "n" word. I think that's what they're thinking. They also don't understand the terminology of "colored" people.

Surprisingly, 3 of the other 3rd grade teachers didn't like the video! I was shocked! Have you heard of other teachers who didn't like it? I thought it was wonderful!

I was not able to find "My Friend Martin", but instead I found "Our Friend, Martin". It matches your description and I was wondering if this was a mistake on the lesson plan, or if this is a different movie.
