I am looking for a rhyme, poem, or song, to help my low third graders remember what synonyms and antonyms are. Does anyone have anything like this? I have tried searching the net and have come up with nothing. Thanks so much!

Here are two examples;

LIGHT
radiance, sparkle, glimmer, glare
light is a ray of fire and flare

KIND
sweet, gentle, considerate, benign
kind is a sweetheart that says Be mine

Maybe if your students wrote some synonym poems it would help them to remember what this term means.

I don't have a poem, but I always point out to my class that synonym and same both start with s. That helps them remember that synonyms mean the same, and therefore antonyms mean the opposite.

Synonym Song

Tune: "Hush Little Baby"

Synonyms almost the same,
Synonyms almost the same,
Come, let's play a matching game.
Sing two words that mean the same.

When I'm happy, I am glad.
When I'm naughty, I am bad.
If it's large, it's also big.
A hog is also called a pig.

See me hurry, See me rush.
To be quiet means to hush.
If I want, I also wish.
A plastic bowl is still a dish.

A good book to read about synonyms is Thesaurus Rex.

We learned these cheers at a conference last year...I'm not quoting exactly, I can't find my folder right now, but you'll get the idea.

Synonyms (and you can clap if you want to)
"A synonym, a synonym, a synonym means the same."

Antonyms
"An antonym means opposite, an antonym means opposite, an antonym means opposite, an-to-nym (clap, clap, clap) op-po-site!

These are great ideas! I think my lower learners will definitely love the songs and cheers! I knew I'd find something from all the wonderful Proteacher folks in cyber land!

To the Tune of "Do you know the Muffin Man?"

Oh do you know the antonyms?
The antonyms, the antonyms.
Oh do you know the antonyms?
The meanings aren't the same.

When I say, "Yes"
You say, "No"
When I say, "Stop"
You say, "Go"
When I say, "Hot"
You say, "Cold"
The meanings aren't the same.

You can continue on with all kinds of word. I usually say the first word and the kids fill in the antonym.

The marshmallows over the fire are toasting
