Does anyone have any ideas for using author's purpose?

I like reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss It is both entertaining and persuasive in its message. There are some really great ideas in the archives on here.

I bring in different items such as advertisements from magazines, non fiction books and fictions books. After I go over the author's purpose PIE-persuade, inform and entertain. I divide the students into groups and they put the items in the correct catagory and explain why.

I brought in an apple pie for my students. First they had to inform me in writing that it was a pie. Then they had to persuade me in writing to let them eat a piece. Last they had to entertain me by writing a story about eating the pie. It was a blast!

That is a great idea. I wish I could do that. Food in our district is such an issue now, I could not get away with it.

Oh I love the idea of bringing the pie in. I did teach PIE this year. Drew a pie, and built an anchor chart. However, I'm kind of regretting it because my state test (from released items I've given) seems to try to trick the kids... for example it will say "teach" instead. So if the choices are persuade, entertain, or teach... well my kids are going to pick persuade or entertain. It's so frustrating!

I have a "chart" on this page of my website. I have mine on my focus wall and we use it all the time.
