I taught this to my first graders last year and they loved this activity. On our floor I taped out 3 sides of a square, large enough that about half my students could stand it in. Then we talked about the molecules in the different states of matter. My kids packed in the "jar" really tightly for solids, swayed side to side for liquids, and bounced off each other and out of the "jar" for gasses.

There's also a really cute book, I believe it's called "What's The Matter" and it gives lots of examples and explanations that children are familiar with.

Hope this helps!!

I like this because it's tangible. If you have access to a freezer it works great. Use water (liquid) and freeze (ice) then when it melts back to water you have liquid again and then set it in the sun to evaporate (gas) or if you have access to a burner (even better) you can put it in a pot and they can see how quickly a small amount will evaporate. Teaching 6th grade science this is the best way I could think of for 2nd grade. Having never taught that grade before I'm not sure, but hope it helps.

Pancakes and Rootbeer Floats

These are both fun ways to show the students solids, liquids, and gases. Pancakes: liquid (the batter), gases (the steam that rises off of the pancake as it cooks), solid (the cooked pancake & the butter if you choose). Rootbeer floats: solid (ice cream), liquid (rootbeer), gases (the foam that is created when the ice cream is put in the rootbeer).

Here's a site you might be able to use:

http://www.vrml.k12.la.us/vtc/activities.asp?ID1=37

I also have other materials to share, but you'll have to email me, since I can't attach them here. If you send me your email address in a message through Proteacher, I'll email them to you. K

I taught 3rd grade for two years and redeveloped the matter unit for my team. I took a more inquiry-based approach and saw quite a difference in my students' abilities to create knowledge on their own through the activities. You may need to purchase some materials, or you may want to pick and choose the activities. Drop me an email and I will gladly send it your way.
