6th grade books - I need some ideas please

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I will post this on the 6th grade board as well, but I am looking for some books for my 6th grade daughter to read over the summer. She is a good reader but is not interested in the Harry Potter series at all, however, she does like to read series. I teach 1st grade, so I have no idea which ones are good and at an appropriate reading level. Thanks for all your help!

These are Awesome books!! The first four are already out - My students in fifth grade (especially the higher level readers) really like them.. I read them too - they are kind of mysteries, with interesting stories and real facts about real places all over the world. Educational too!!!!!

Series... My students favorites include:

My 6th grade girls LOVE Twilight - if you aren't sure if you want her to read it, read it first to see if it's ok for her. For some at this age it's ok, for some it's not (content, not necessarily reading level- they're easy to read).

Along those same lines for a little older/mature, my students (both boys and girls) like anything by Carolione B. Cooney (The face on the Milk Carton, Flight 116 is Down, The Terrorist... etc...). She writes all sorts of different types of fiction - realistic, historical...

Some of my girls have been reading this series about cats called Warrior Cats... They highly recommend those for people that like adventure and cats.

Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy super mysteries (they are different than just Nancy Drew or just the Hardy boys... they are a lot of fun!)

I'll keep thinking!

My 6th grade girls are really into these series right now:

Twilight (Stephenie Meyer) (more mature after novel #1)
Uglies (Scott Westerfield) (Sci-fi, "perfect world" scenario)
The Lightning Thief (Rick Riordan) (Main character is son of a greek god)
Warriors (Erin Hunter) (easier reads..cats having adventures)
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Ann Brashears) (more mature)
The Clique Series (Lisi Harrison) (typical teenage girl angst)

My fifth grade girls loved Sharon Creech books. The Inkheard series was huge with my whole class. The Mysterious Benedict Society (there are two) was very popular. If she likes action and spy adventure (some of girls did) the Alex Rider books were popular with both the boys and girls. Twilight was loved by a few. Shug was a favorite.

Sharon Draper is a wonderful author anything by her would be good.

Hatchet is a good book, Julie of the Wolves, Summer of the Swans,
Anne of Green Gables, what about some Nancy Drew Books.

Oh a book I love and am rereading it this summer is Redwall!!

One of my absolute favorites is "The Fairy Rebel" by Lynne Reid Banks (of Indian in the Cupboard fame).

I read it every year, whether I'm teaching 4th,5th, or 6th grade!

Dear Oriel,
There are 3 series in the series of Inkheart. Book1: Inkheart, Book2: Inkheart, and Book3: Inkdeath. Inkheart is 23points, and the others are 29points each. This gives you a total of 81points.

6th Grade Reading Books
Old 06-16-2012, 01:32 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #25

Hi I'm not a teacher, but I have a couple books that were really popular with my class (6th grade)

All Wendy Mass books (Finally, A Mango Shaped Space, 11 Birthdays, etc.)
Hatchet (Gary Paulson)
Lawn Boy (Gary Paulson)
The Hunger Games Series (Suzanne Collins, but it is a little violent so you might want to read it first)
A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket)
The Invention of Hugo Cabret (Brian Selznick)
Out of My Mind (Sharon Draper)
Twilight (Stephenie Meyer, again, you might want to read it first)
Stargirl (Jerry Spinelli)
Holes (Louis Sachar)

I hope with all these ideas of books you found something!!!!!
