I was going to do a bulletin board for Back to School night using glyphs. I was thinking maybe flowers for "Our Second Grade Garden" or something... Does anyone have any good instructions for making a flower glyph? Thanks in advance!!

Here is a glyph idea I found on another site.

Sunflower Glyph
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Materials:
orange, brown, green and yellow construction paper
circle template (head)
petal template
stem template
leaf template
sunflower seeds
glue
scissors

HEAD
Do you have pets?
yes - cut a brown circle for the head.
No - cut an orange circle for the head
Place it at the top of the stem.

SEEDS
What number month were you born?
Place this many seeds on the head.

PETALS
How old are you?
Place this many petals around the head

LEAVES
How many brothers and sisters do you have?
Place this many leaves on the stem

Glue the the sunflower parts in place.

I've done flower glyphs for a couple of years. Here's what I do...

flower center = student's name
number of petals = number of letters in first name
number of popsicle sticks for stems = syllables in name
number of leaves = vowels

I usually put them in a long window box with florist foam and easter grass on top. The class then writes a class Important poem about our names. I post this above the window box. It makes a very cute display.

I'm sure if you do a search on "Chrysanthemum" activities you'll find this and some more ideas. Pretty sure that's where I got this.

I do a name glyph after reading Kevin Henkes' book "Chrysanthemum". I have a teacher made page that has one circle, (the middle of the flower), petals, and leaves. Students write their name in the middle of the circle. They color a petal for each letter in their name, color a leaf for each vowel in their name. The petals are cut out and glued to the circle. I then give students a craft stick for each syllable in their name. They glue these together to make the stem, and glue the leaves to the stem. (Sometimes I hot glue the sticks if we don't have time for them to dry properly). I have bought some cheap florist styrofoam and made little "window boxes". Students stick their flowers in the boxes and it makes a great display.
