What kind of information is most important to talk about? Do you do a slide show or power point? Do the kids come too? Just wondering if kinder parents have more to ask then the other grades. I just want to be ready!!

We all meet in the gym =give some general announcements -then each teacher leads their parents and students to their room. When we get to the room, I stand at the door and give each family a sheet that tells them where to put their school supplies, etc. Then I mingle for the next 10 minutes. (puzzles are set out for kids to take to their seat if their family is done early with the list I give them)
Then the principal rounds up the students and takes them outside to play or a movie in bad weather.
I show a powerpoint presentation to the parents. I have name tag necklaces for first day at their seats. I , also, hand out a ABC of Kindergarten to them to take home. A is for Attendance, Please call the school at _________by 9am etc.
It takes about 45 minutes.

Backpack Night

My children come for visitation during the week. So when they get to backpack night they have already been shown the room. During visitation I take each child around the room show them the calendar, their locker, take a picture, show them how the discipline wall and word wall works, where the lunch stick will go. I then sit down with them and parents. We talk about things I want them to do at home. I have these things for them to look at such as be familiar with adding dominoes dots, get to know dots on a dice. Practice counting at home with objects. Writing name correctly (I have child write name while they are there). I then have copies of rhyming and concept of word games. Alphabet cards so parents can help them practice on letter and sounds. A copy of report card and sight words we will work on all year. Discipline think sheet.
Then on backpack night I have theme necklaces. Such as foam stars with their name and school on them and a sack. They love this. Then they go off to do a scavenger hunt. This has been very successful. They meet their other teachers. Ex: Go to gym meet Mr. Jones. Meet the Counselor. They have things they give to them for sack. Not candy or they just visit with them and parent. Go to boys bathroom flush the stool. Wash your hands. The parents love showing them. Go to the office meet the secretary. She gives them a bandaide if nurse is not there. Meet the principal, pencil from her ect. Look at the playground. Library, computer lab. ect. It lets the parents and child become familiar with the building. Visit with teachers. Then they end back up in kdg. room. I let them get in the prize jar and they go home.

Meet the Teacher Night

Clip to ScrapBook #4

At our school, meet the teacher night is from 5-7pm the Friday before school starts. Since the parents/students do not come all at the same time, I do not go into too much detail. I give out a newsletter that includes a supply list and important first day stuff, an info. card that I keep for the entire year, and a manila folder containing all other school papers they have to be signed and returned.

Since the parents are only in my room for about 10-15 miunutes, I have the students stay with their parents. While parents are filing out info. card, I talk breifly about our communication binder and my expectations for the year.

As they leave, I give parents an apple with a poem attached and the students get a goody bag with dollar store finds.

The most important thing that we do that night is find out how each child is getting home the first day of school. I have my para do this for me as the parents come in.

Attached is my newsletter and info. card.

for the newsletter and student information card. I really like how you have the parent contact log included on the information card. Last year I had seperate folders for both and it drove me crazy!!

parent night

We test students before school starts and we take that opportunity to meet the parents and students and answer any questions they may have. We also take care of any housekeeping things we need to before school starts.

Once school starts we have an informational night and we just cover our curriculum and how they can help at home. We discuss homework and some of our routines. It's only half an hour and by then parents have more questions that they want to ask regarding school procedures.

I like your ideas. We have open house right before school starts and I too do a scavenger type hunt. I like the idea of the bandaid, pencil, etc. It is usually such a huge turnout that I don't have much time to talk to the parents, but I always encourage them to visit all of the different areas! Would you be willing to share your note?
