I LOVE THIS BOOK!! So great for early literacy!

Last year, we had been doing the AT family at the beginning of the year, and so after reading Mary Wore Her REd Dress, we made a class book where the kids did:

______ wore his _____ hat, ______ hat, ______ hat, ______ wore his _______ hat all day long.

It was really good for the beginning of the year, because they can write their name and they can copy the color word of their choice from their nametag.

For the illustration, the kids chose a hat tracer and then painted a hat of their choice onto a piece of paper with tempra paint. After it dried, they drew the head and body under the hat. They were so cute, and the kids read the story ALL YEAR LONG.

I've attached the sentence frame I used, but it's probably all messed up because I used a special font that has to be downloaded on your computer to read it. You can fix it easily, though.

I thought of one more thing that I might do this year:

You could also do a pocket chart activity before the class book to get them used to the words. If you already have the kid's names on sentence strips for other beginning of the year stuff, then you could just use those and switch them out to make the rhyme. You could also let the kids play with switching out the color and clothing item. Play with the pocket chart activity for the week during shared reading, and then make the class book on Friday.

I also had my kids copy the patterned text. To illustrate, I took a digital picture of them and we pasted their snapshot above the children's writing. They absolutely loved having their sanpshot in the class book.
