Where do you teach? Are you from NY? I am from there. One idea would be to have them make patriotic pictures. (flags or red, white and blue stars). Actually have the whole school make one big flag using red, white, and blue stars. On the stars they can decorate it. Its a tough time especially at the five year anniversary.

Something I've done in the past was have the kids make an American flag using ripped paper scraps. I traced a flag outline onto a piece of white construction paper. Then they ripped bits of red, white, and blue construction paper and glued them down in an overlapping way to form the stripes and the blue corner area. I've also thought about having them look through magazines to rip out pictures of red and blue things to make the color. I also have some white star stickers that I give them for the corner bit. I've done this twice and both times they turned out nice.

September 11th is my birthday and a day in history I'll never forget.

Weave a Freedom Bracelet

I created this activity in remembrance of those who died on 9/11. Older students can weave the bracelets, as shown here, and those who are in K, 1, and 2 can make rope bracelets from the red, white, and blue yarn. In addition, there is a brief discussion about terrorism in terms that children can understand. The activity has been linked by Dickinson College in the Teaching 9/11 section of their Web site. URL address for the activity is http://www.kid-at-art.com/htdoc/lesson57.html.
