Our 2nd grade reading groups have usually been named after colors - boring! I want to change that. I thought maybe candy names, like Skittles, etc., but my husband said that's commercial - boo! Our class mascot is the bees, so insects are out. Any ideas for a theme? Then I'd let each group choose a name from the theme. Thanks!
Our school mascot is a pirate so the past few year I've done pirate ship themed reading groups.
This year my classroom theme is Patriotic so I'm doing National Monuments as my reading groups.
You could do types of a specific animal: birds of prey, breeds of dogs, fast running (tigers, lions, etc).
One of the 2nd grade teachers I work with lets the guided reading group come up with a name for themselves. We have had pro sports teams, music groups, pets, you name it. Their uniqueness really comes through!
I know this is an old post, however, not only do I love my CARE (Children Are Reading Everyday) group names but most importantly, so do my kids...from grades 2-6 over the past 6 years! I have group names for those who are still working on phonemes, then they progress through various names that (to me) reflect their progress through the reading stages. They are...Sound Hounds, Word Wizards, Page Pirates, Book Bandits and finally, Chapter Chiefs.
In Kindergarten, we've used names of cereals before (Fruit Loops, Cookie Crisps, Cheerios, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Puff, Lucky Charms). I think these have been the favorite group name. Fruit or vegetable names that coincided with my colored notebooks were helpful to me, though!
