Any reading group name ideas?

Our 2nd grade reading groups have usually been named after colors - boring! I want to change that. I thought maybe candy names, like Skittles, etc., but my husband said that's commercial - boo! Our class mascot is the bees, so insects are out. Any ideas for a theme? Then I'd let each group choose a name from the theme. Thanks!

I know you said colors were boring, but what about the crayola colors, but use the unique names. Also- your favorite books or cartoon characters. I am having the same problem, too for 5th grade.

One year I used the names of favorite zoo animals; pandas, koalas, etc.

States, birds, characters from books, dog breeds, farm animals (if you are in a rural area) might work.

Our school mascot is a pirate so the past few year I've done pirate ship themed reading groups.
This year my classroom theme is Patriotic so I'm doing National Monuments as my reading groups.
You could do types of a specific animal: birds of prey, breeds of dogs, fast running (tigers, lions, etc).

Because it is your reading groups try using author's names, or character names appropriate for your grade!

Since reading groups are (or should be) flexible, I just call the name of the book they're reading to come to me for our guided reading time.

Giving them stagnant names reminds me of the old days when kids were either in the high bluebird group or the low robins group

Naming reading groups

One of the 2nd grade teachers I work with lets the guided reading group come up with a name for themselves. We have had pro sports teams, music groups, pets, you name it. Their uniqueness really comes through!

We've used names of bands or artists (none that are inappropriate, of course). I love Supermonkey's suggestion about using authors names.
