I teach 3rd grade Math and need some new and creative ideas how to teach ordering and comparing numbers. Thanks for your help!

I posted this below, but here's a game my kids beg to play. I call it beat the teacher. They each have a markerboard, as do I. We make a place value chart on it. I use a deck of cards, and as I turn over a card, they have to decide where to put that digit. Once it is in place, they cannot erase, even if the next card I draw is a higher number. We then compare them, and if they make a number larger than mine, theyget a point. After 3 numbers are on our board, I have them number them either from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Another "game" I do is called Order Up. I have cards with numbers printed off the computer and laminated. I tell them round one we are ordering least to greatest, and they can talk, but if they are in the wrong place, they are eliminated. Second round, they do the same thing, but they do it silently. Third round we order greatest to least talking, and fourth silently. Each round, I collect and redistribute the cards. Kids that get out serve as my checkers, they discuss if the students still in the game are correct. Kids still standing get a sticker or piece of candy.

Later in the year, I do the same type of activity in small groups with fraction cards.

I really love mathwire.co for great games, activities, and math related art projects. You can search the sight and find material on almost every topic imaginable!

Here is a page containing activities for place value and comparing numbers. You may be interested in the activities atthe very bottom of the page:

Here are some I use. They come from van de Walle's book. My students love playing them. The one with 3 numbers, I sometimes send home for homework.
