Overused Words

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Does anyone have a clever idea for posting overused or 'dead words' in Writing? Last year, my students were used to seeing these words posted on a 'gravestone'. (ex: said, nice, )
Any great ideas?

Jail words

We call ours "jail words." I made a small poster with jail cell bars on it and then paste the overused words onto it.

I think I may have words to use instead with wings or something like that around the jail (you know kind of like they're free to use)...not sure how to go about this though.

I saw a post on here where the person had a bb that said, "Light up your writing." Then they had flashlights with the word and strips of paper with new words for the light. I know it is not the grave stones but just a thought.

I saw this in Really Good Stuff and adapted it to make bulletin board. C-commonly O-overused W-words. I titled the bulletin board "Moooo"ve Over COWS! I used cowprint paper fabric and it turned out pretty cute.

dead words

We always flush our words, the kids write the word on toilet paper and they literally flush them down the toilet. I had a picture of a toilet with the words swirling down being flushed away. We do a whole funeral, everyone wears black and they can say some parting words...

This isn't as creative as the previous posts, but one idea I found was to make a paper chain and write the overused word on the top chain and write "better" words on each chain under it and hang them up.

dead word wall

I created a dead word wall by writing the words on tombstones and hanging them under the title "Dead Word Wall". You can find a template on the internet, copy it to a word document, and insert a text box to type the dead word in.
