Oral Reading competition

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am a 6th grade reading teacher from Texas. I am coaching Oral Reading for a district competition. I am desperately looking for more poems ideally for middle school aged children that contain dialogue and will allow for enthusiasm and good voice. Everything that I find is really too short. The poems may be no longer than 6 minutes. If anyone knows of any good poems or collections of poetry that I may find, I would be so grateful if you could share!

Thank you!

If it is poetry you are looking for, try www.poetryoutloud.org. On the right, they have a "poems" section. These poems are specially chosen for a national recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.

Another great place is Poetry 180. This is Billy Collins' site, sponsored by the Library of Congress. The poems are all contemporary pieces.

Additionally, I really enjoy Ted Kooser's site called American Life in Poetry.

Finally, www.poets.org is very easy to work with, especially if you're looking for poems from the canon or those organized according to theme.
