Don't eat me!

I do a board where the kids write from the point of view of a turkey. They are trying to convince people not to eat them. They usually start with "Don't eat me...". Then we make a turkey that looks like he is holding the paper. I do not have patterns on file, but it is fairly simple, so I'll try and explain.
  • Cut a large round circle for the body out of brown. You will glue the writing to this circle
  • Use the brown scraps and have the kids trace three of their fingers being held together. These will be like the wings folded over the front, holding the paper
  • Cut long strips of orange and fan fold for legs
  • Then I have patterns for the head and feet, but I am sure your could google something.
  • Attach feathers from the back.
These turn out really cute. Hope those directions made sense

I really like that idea...what are some examples the students say about don't eat me?
I like to give a prompt at times, such as examples.

Thanks

ideas

They usually suggest other foods and give reasons why they would be better. For example,
"Don't eat me, eat a burger instead. It's juicier." or
"Don't eat me, I am all skin and bones, find a different turkey with more meat"

Hope this helps. I wish I had examples in front of me, they turn out so neat

Turkey Glyphs

We make turkey glyphs. I might have gotten the idea from someone on here. I do:
White Body: don't like turkey
Light brown body: like white meat
Dark brown body: like dark meat

red feathers: like cranberries
yellow feathers: like corn
green feathers: like green beans
white feathers: like mashed potatoes
pink feathers: like stuffing
orange feathers: like pumpkin pie

orange feet: stay home
yellow feet: visit someone else's house

orange beak: eat in kitchen
yellow beak: eat in different room

red waddle: eat dessert
no waddle: don't eat dessert

I just make tracers for each of the parts (a set for each table) and cut the paper to the tracer size and then each table can trace and cut as they need to...

Naked Turkey

Look up naked turkey on PT and you will see a take home activity already made in english and spanish. I would link it but don't know how to do that here. The students are convincing people not to eat them and they dress up the turkey.

I'm making a "giving tree" for my bulletin board this year. Each child receives two pre-cut leaves that they could paint (Fall colors) and write what they are thankful for. In the end, the tree in full of wonderful messages.

Pardon me

Last year I had my students write persuasive paragraphs to convince the President to pick them as the turkey to pardon for Thanksgiving. I showed them a video online of the official Presidential pardon from the year before and talked about the history of the turkey pardons. Then I posted the paragraphs on the board with the title "pardon me"

Don't eat Turkey

I do this writing also. We say, Don't eat turkey for Thanksgiving! This year, try _____.
Then we brainstorm a list of favorite main courses like pizza, burgers, chicken nuggets, et. to eat instead of turkey. They have to come up with 3 reasons why their selected item would be better to eat than turkey! They turn out great! Very funny!
