I am a literacy coach for grades K-6 and we are focusing on note-taking this year. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to teach note-taking and at what grade to begin instruction?

Mr. Coley has a great method that I loved!!! When kids take notes they have pictures that go along with it. The kids have a blast doing it.

I have my fourth, fifth, and sixth graders take notes. My 4s tend to just copy what I do, but my 5s and 6s have been able to decipher between what they should/shouldn't take notes on.

On the NYS ELA test there is a listening part. The kids listen to the story read to them once and the second time the teacher reads it, they have to take notes. We teach them to listen carefully the first time for what they think is important. ( the 5 w's) This includes details, climax, conclusion , etc. They are taught to JOT down things and spelling doesn't matter as long as they know what they meant by what they wrote. I tell my class to jot down things that are important ( make sure they are phrases or words,,,NOT sentences because they'll be too busy copying that down and not hear the story being read) .When we go over it, a child may have written the word "fire house" . I'll say "ok, what did that remind you of?" and they tell me the part in the story where there was a house on fire. They can tell me the details they remember now, but writing down all the details is too time consuming. Notes are reminders or what they read. They are words or phrases that will help them remember what the story or passage was about.
Now that I'm re reading your question, I don't think this is what you meant. Do you mean opening a SS text book and taking down notes on the important facts that are in bold? The subtitles? (sigh)

Cornell Note-taking method

I have seen a powerpoint that shows exactly how to use this method. I am not sure where. (You can do a search. That is how I found it.) I like this because it helps students begin. Many don't know what to write. With this method, they write what you write and add to it. Once they get the hang of it, they can run with it.
