Fiction and Non-Fiction?

I am a bit embarassed to ask this but..I will ask.

Fiction and Non-Fiction.

I am trying to makesure when I read a book that is "realistic", for example; a story about a little boy and his babysister being born. Would a book like this be considered fiction? I know about fairytale and things of that sort but what about realistic things. I hope I'm making sense.

I would think that if it is more a "story" then it would be considered realistic fiction.

If it is more factual (telling about a boy and what to expect with a new sibling in the family) then it would be non-fiction.

That sounds like the genre of realistic fiction: Things that could happen, but didn't.

I always teach the students that to be considered non fiction, it must have SOME informational text features such as: table of contents, index, glossary, maps, charts, tables, photos. Not all second grade level books will have all these features, but they will have some.
