Words their way management

If you teach WTW, what do you have the other kiddos doing while you are teaching a group? How many times a week do you meet with your groups?

I have my kids in workstations during guided reading (about 40 minutes), and I hesitate to keep them there any longer. I'd welcome any ideas! Thanks!

words their way

I only meet with groups on Monday when I introduce words. The other group is doing journal writing at that time.

Monday: Introduce words/word sorts
Tuesday: Activity (3 times each, triangles, etc)
Wednesday: Spelling sentences
Thursday: Activity sheet
Friday: Test

I have an hour 20 minutes for my reading block. I have each group 20 minutes. So I assign about 20 minutes of seatwork. Then the rest of the time is reading workshop. My class couldnt handle the entire time doing independent reading.

Hope this helps.

We meet with three groups in 45 minutes once a week. While I am with a group the second group is reading and eating their snack and the third group is doing a word search using the words from their sort.
The rest of the week the children do a spelling activity each morning.
Monday-cut your word sort and put in your storage envelope
Tuesday-sort your words at your space
Wednesday-sort your words and record in your spelling journal
Thursday-choose ten words from your sort and create sentences
Friday-glue your words in your spelling journal
The children also have word work activities to do during Daily 5, like stamps, rainbow words, Franklin spellers, magnet letters.
I do team with another second grade partner and we divided the 45 students into 6 groups of various sizes. We have also had the Spec. Ed staff pull a seventh group when needed.
The children have a spelling notebook at home to do similar activiities.
