GT reading group

Does anyone teach a group of GT readers in with your regular class? I am teaching the supposed GT students this year along with my (again supposed) higher readers. I only have 3 diagostically placed GT readers & I went to the first training workshop last week. It's an unbelievable amount of work and is basically an entirely other curriculum. It would be tough for a group that is half the class but 3 out of 24 is just about impossible! How do you differentiate to get the GT students what they need to be challenged?

I have used chapter books with these readers. They should be able to do most of the work independently. Use higher level thinking questions that they would respond to after reading a chapter. While your other students are doing seatwork or center work, you can bring the other group together for discussion time.

I do lit circles. If you can find the lit circle version of the chapter book, they have great discussion questions in the back that are even labeled according to what level of blooms they are. I have two groups that are extremely high and i include my four gt kids in with those other deep thinking kiddos... then i pick two books and let them choose which one they want to read. that determines the two groups. i meet with them like regular guided reading groups as far as time, but it's a literature discussion instead. Perhaps by the end of the year I can turn them loose on their own, but right now that wouldn't be productive for them.
