Webcams in classrooms

I have a sick student who will not be returning to school. My principal has suggested we provide her home instruction (a tutor) which was done last year for her as well. So obviously I am fine with the tutor deal, but here's the part that is not sitting well with me. He also suggested we set up a webcam in my classroom. I am seriously not okay with being on camera all day or even part of the day for so many reasons. What do you all think? (By the way, I teach 2nd grade.)

I wouldn't want to do it either. I think that would be very uncomfortable for everyone. I'm sure some parents wouldn't want it for their kids either.

I don't think I would be okay with that either. However, to try to get your principal off the idea maybe you could share w/ him/her that webcamming uses a lot of bandwidth and your school might not be able to handle that. My school cannot handle webcams unless the office knows ahead of time b/c they cannot run their data programs at the same time.

Maybe your P needs to check into this.
Good luck!

I don't think it is realistic and I wouldn't be comfortable teaching in front of a camera all day either. Could you suggest that the class use the webcam once a week? Maybe the kids could say hello, tell their friend what they've been up to and recite a poem they've been learning or something like that? Then the focus would be off of you and the sick student would still get to feel like part of the group.
