I'm looking for some activities to do that will teach estimating numbers to my class.
Any ideas are welcome. TIA

Estimation Jar

Get a cleaned out peanut butter or other jar and put in something small...fruit loops, eraser tips, m&ms, cotton balls, etc...The kids have to estimate how many things are in the jar. (I usually put 50-100 pieces in the jar.) Then, we count it out. I have let the kids take the jar home as well and they can fill it.

that I send home every week with a kid (I draw a name each week) and they fill it with whatever they want and choose the number. They then bring it back and each kiddo estimates how many items are in the container. The one who estimates closest gets to pick a prize from my prize box. They absolutely LOVE it and it's a great class activity and counting activity. AND, the kids take total ownership over the estimation jar when it's their week to fill it.

My students bring a plastic container once during the week when they are the star. They enjoy doing this activity and I love NOT having to do it. They bring beads, toothpicks, pennies, Cheerios, paper clips, bobby pins, Skittles, marbles, rubber bands, gummi worms, stack of index cards, elbow macaroni, acorns, leaves and so many more item that I might not think of.

I do an estimation jar each week. I fill it the first time. the children estimate on a slip of paper. I pick the one closest to the total on Friday. That person then brings the jar home and keeps the contents. They refill it and send it b ack in on Monday and thed process begins again. I only have to fill it the first time. We do it all year and hopefully all children will get it at least once.
