Reading Logs

For those teachers who have their students complete reading logs at home, how do you grade them and/or hold the students accountable for them?

Thanks!

Parents initial them each night

I check them each morning. If they read I give them some encouragement. If they did not read I write "oops" on their log plus the date. Then at the end of the month I have Lunch Bunch for all the students who read daily. We eat in our classroom and watch a short fun film like Reading Rainbow. Also, if they did not read they have to pull a homework strip which usually eliminates them from weekly rewards, especially if they miss more then one night of reading.

I love your idea! I'm having problems with the same 3-4 students not filling out their reading logs even though I check them at least twice a week. Just one question - what are homework strips?

weekly and students are required to have 120 minutes each week. Parents sign it. I keep a spreadsheet on Excel of minutes each student reads. It makes it easy to see who hasn't turned in a reading log. Periodically I announce my top readers. Each quarter, I total up the minutes and the top three readers get a gift certificate for a book at either our book fair or scholastic. Students like hearing how many minutes they've read and they like to compete with each other for the most minutes. I post winners on my website, too.

Oh, and if they don't turn in their reading log or it's not signed on the due date, they pull a card for missing homework. (It's my discipline system) this can affect their Friday Free Time.

class number on it posted on the wall chart. If they do not do their homework or misbehave they pull a strip of paper to place in their pocket for the day. Each offense is represented by a different color. At the end of the day I record all strips pulled so the parents know what kind of day their child had at school. Then I remove all strips from the pockets. If the child pulled no strips I highlight the day in pink for "being in the pink". This means they had a great day. I record their daily behavior while the children are writing down their homework and getting packed to go home. I record missing homework in the morning while checking homework at each desk while they read silently.

Reading Logs turned in on Fridays

My students are required to turn their reading logs in each Friday morning for me to check. If they have them completed, they visit the treat box and get $100 Barrett Bucks for their classroom economy account. If they do not have them or they are not compelted, they have quiet lunch that day and have to fill out a missing assignment form just as if a homework assignment was not turned in on time. Works for me!

Reading Log Homework

I have a reading Log that goes home on Monday - assignment: read 20 minutes a night (total = 100 minutes for the week). The Reading Logs are due on Monday. I just take one Homework Grade for turning this in (HW is worth 3 points in my grade book).
If they forget to turn it in on Monday - they miss 5 minutes of recess (to think about not forgetting their homework). They can turn it in on Tuesday for full credit (all 3 points). After Tuesday it is ZERO points in my grade book.
I also note in their Assignment Notebook that Reading Log homework was NOT turned in. So that when parents sign the Assignmetn Notebook, they see that a Homework Assignment was missing.
Also, we use Skyward for our Grade Book. This an Internet Based Gradebook that parents can access anytime and see all assignments & grades their children have. So, I also make a note in my Gradebook (which parents can read) that says "Reading Log not tunred in - zero points!"
