Grammar

I am not teaching "grammar" to my students. I never have in all 7 years of teaching first grade. Last year when I taught second grade, I taught grammar each week.

I guess I kind of feel like, why do first graders need to know what is a noun, verb, adjective, etc. Plus, I hate worksheets and the grammar book I have is, of course, worksheets.

I teach using a reading workshop and writing workshop format. Plus, I do interactive and shared reading and writing. So, I guess I am hoping that through this they are learning punctuation, possessive nouns and plural nouns, contractions, etc. without me explicitly teaching those things during a "grammar" time.

What is your opinion or thoughts on this. I appreciate your input.

first grade grammar

I completely agree.
Some people think children can't learn to write unless they learn grammar first. WHAT?!
Grammar only makes sense in the context of writing, just as Spelling only makes sense in the context of writing.

My curriculum teaches a little grammar in first grade, but doesn't use the terms noun, verb, or adjective. They are 'describing words' etc. I don't mind bring their attention to 'describing words'.

My second graders only cover nouns, verbs and adjectives. We have a "Word Collection' on the wall and words are added to the chart in their categories, but I don't push it.

Grammar for grammar's sake is more than awful. It can turn a curious child into a bored child. So much of what happens in school is 'playing school'.
Just my opinion.

One thing to help

I have the same problem. But this year with Storytown it is much better. One thing I do is to make sound effects for the Capital letters and periods. Each time they have to make a capital letter, they say zoooooopppp. Then for a period they pop their mouth, after licking their lips.
