What exactly is "Round Robin" reading?

Hello everyone. I am a little embarrassed to ask this question. I am not quite a brand new teacher and I know I've heard this phrase before but I feel silly asking my colleagues at school. It has been brought up by one of my team teachers as something we should not do, but she still does. Is it just having all students read out loud? I must admit, I do that and not always just during our reading. For example, if we are looking at a new chapter in our social studies book, we read it together as a whole. Is that not what should be done? I also pull sticks when reading aloud. I have each child's name on a stick and pull their names randomly. I like to do that because it allows all children to get a turn, not just those same 5 or 6 who always have their hand up to read.

Any thoughts, advice or suggestions? Thanks.

It's where you go around the room and each child reads one after another. I agree it's hard to do social studies and science without reading the chapter like that - you have to cover the material and it's usually higher than a lot of their reading levels so I can't just have them read it themselves. We're lucky since I have a Promethean board now and we can use our online books and it reads the pages for them. We've also done "Popcorn" where the kids stop when I call popcorn and they have to pick someone to pick up where they left off. You can also divide them into groups with a couple of high readers paired with lower ones and they can read and summarize the material then share with the rest of the class.

Round Robin

Yeah this was popular when I was in school and I hated it! I used to count students and paragraphs so I knew which one I had to read then wait for my turn. I didn't pay attention to the rest of the reading. This is part of the reason we are not supposed to do it. Kids who have trouble reading do this and then only focus on that and learn nothing.
Reading Social studies is still teaching reading! I use it to go over text features and practice prediction, summarizing, and other skills. I mix up how we do it each time. Sometimes I have the kids pick a partner other times I pull sticks to put them together. I also mix up how they read. One day they switch off every other sentence other days its paragraphs or every 4th sentence. I also review with them that they should never have to ask their partner where they are because they are responsible for knowing because they are reading in their mind as their partner is reading aloud.

Out of favor

Each child taking a turn reading out loud is often called round robin reading. It has definitely fallen out of favor, but lots of people still quietly do it.

Let's do the "2s"

2 minutes reading with partner
2 minutes discussing selection
2 minutes sharing with class(whole group)
2 minutes writing/or drawing a quick illustration about main idea or topic

This is a great cooperative grouping activity, and allows everyone to be involved with reading the material without "round robin" practices! Make sure to carefully think about how you want to pair up your students(e.g. high reader with lower reader, give out color cards and find your "color partner", number partners, etc.

I really like the idea of popcorn reading. I will use that tomorrow. Thanks!
