Supplementing Invitations to Literacy

Does anyone here use HM's Invitations to Literacy? I am trying to supplement the program with authentic text, and I am wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for me. We are now starting "The World Outside My Door" Theme and the books that are included in the program are "My River", "Citybook" and "Listen to the Desert".

The goal of the theme is for students to understand that people and animals live in many different environments.

I am a new teacher and my library isn't very extensive. If anyone can tell me books that take place in these different living environments that I can add, I'd appreciate it!

That is the series we have at our school. It is so old that you can no longer get materials for it. I love the stories in it anyway.

I am doing My River this week.

Here are some titles I use:

Where the River Begins (Picture Puffin) (Paperback)

Living Near a River (Rookie Read-About Geography) (Paperback)

Living in a Desert (Rookie Read-About Geography) (Paperback)

A Desert Habitat (Introducing Habitats) by Kelley Macaulay and Bobbie Kalman (Paperback - Oct 30, 2006)
Deserts by Gail Gibbons (Paperback - Oct 1999)

Wow! City! (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards)) by Robert Neubecker (Hardcover - Aug 30, 2004)

The Country Mouse and City Mouse is a great book too.

Hope these help!

I'm not sure how well supported their old series is, but they have lots of fairly general supports on their web site www.eduplace.com. I like their graphic organizer collection.

You might find some of the same themes that are in your books with support ideas in their science and literacy series.
