How do I let a volunteer go?

I was assigned a daily volunteer by my principal (long story). This is a young girl who wants to become a teacher. The long story short is -- she is completely incompetent at everything I ask her to do -- I give her simpler tasks every day and she screws them up! I have tried giving her feedback but she isn't learning. I don't have any more time in the day to tell her what I need her to do. It is time to let her go. I can't seem to find the words. What do I say to her?

Can't you tell your principal and have him reassign her or get rid of her? That sounds like an administrative duty to me.

Good luck! We certainly don't have time to 'teach' the help on top of teaching the kids!

((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))

Can she just help out with the kids rather than complete tasks for you? I have two volunteers per day for 40 minutes per volunteer and I find they are extremely valuable. I have them interact with the kids and don't ask them to do any tasks for me but I am in pre-k so that may not work for you. Otherwise I do not have any advice on how to break the bad news to her.

I agree. I would ask your administrator to reassign her.

Can she just read with kids? I know that when I volunteered, I really just wanted to be with the kids. I got really annoyed that every time I went in I had to make copies, or get projects together. That wasnt really useful to me in becoming a teacher. I was a volunteer though, so I did it, but maybe it would be more useful for her to interact with the children to see if teaching is what she really wants to do? Could she do a group read aloud so that you have those few minutes to do some planning?

Just tell the principal that the kids are too distracted by her being there. Ask that she be placed elsewhere.
