i am a student... iknow... but listen, ussually if your talking about younger kids then you should use choclates or sweets. mabye bring choclates and say how do we split this. if you are in a higher grade then ever say it. if they are not good at math then they think of it harder when you say complicated terms. write it. write it short. write it complicated. what i mean by complicated is using harder terms then ussual. try to keep it short so their first expresion is this is going to be easy.

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but I found Halloween word problems and rewrote them using the names of my students. At the end they had to write their own and we had everyone solve them. It doesn't have to be Haloween related but my kids really liked seeing their names in the problems. I think I found the original version using a PT search.

Cooperative Learning and Representation

Group students in pairs or triads. Give each group a different problem to solve, then they have to make a poster explaining the problem and how it was solved, showing all steps. Have the students represent the problem using words, symbols, and pictures. The students then present their work to the class and explain how they solved the problem. Give all students a copy of all the problems before the presentations.
(You could give everyone the same problem, but then the presentations get boring and repetitive.)
