ideas for a student that has been held back

Hello, I am in need of ideas for a student who has been held back due to a parent request. This student is reading at a 2nd grade level and has already done most of the activities we do in Kinder. I know that he is bored and I feel that I am not doing my job in challenging him. Right now, I have him read is AR book and test while I am doing my phonics lesson and I have a 1st grade workbook for him to do during math. Does anyone have any suggestions that can help me?

Why would the parents hold him back if he is so advanced? Is he so immature socially? I just recently moved a kiddo from kinder to 1st because he was so advanced. The decision was actually made by his parents, but we met as a school and the decision was made to make the move if parents were on board. He is doing well and fits in in all aspects. But, before the move he was a challenge. He was so far a head of the other kids, that it was becoming a distraction to the others.

Do you have the help of a GT teacher to give you some suggestions? If not, could you make arrangements for him to go to another class for reading or for math? That was something we discussed for my student before the decision was made to move him on. If you have a supportive school and parents, that may be an option.

He has a summer birthday and his parents felt that he needed another year of Kinder. He is a distraction to the others because he knows all the answers and is BORED!

No, we are a small district and do not have a GT teacher, we all have GT training. I will ask about moving him to another class for math and reading, but he will be in 1st next year and then that teacher will have the same problem I am having.

I would call a meeting with the parents, first grade teacher, school psycholgist and principal. Professionally and honestly discuss your concerns and develop a plan.

Maybe the parents have not considered all the facts, or are unaware of how advanced he is compared to other kindergarteners.

The parents are aware how advance he is. They are both former teachers and are now in administration. Our principal did not agree with holding this student back and she is aware how advance he is and that he is bored.
