help with writing!

I can competently teach reading, but I confess my weakness is teaching writing. Are there any good writing programs or websites besides Meacham's that any one can recommend?

I use this program which is a series of books that guide in teaching different types of writing. It is especially good for K-2 kids. You can check out the room devoted to it right here on PT.

Lucy Calkins wrote the books.

Where can you buy these books? I have checked Borders and Barnes and Nobel.

The Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Primary is published by Heinemann and you can order right off their website. I also like Stephanie Parson's First Grade Writers: Units of Study. It goes along well with Lucy Calkins and has some additional units that are appropriate for first graders...like a unit on pattern books, non-fiction question and answer books, personal narrative, and fiction. She also wrote with Lucy Calkiins in her Units of Study. (also published by Heinemann)

I was going to suggest Stephanie Parsons' book as well. It should be a good stepping off point if you can't get the Units of Study. http://www.amazon.com/First-Grade-Wr...7267048&sr=8-1

I also use the Units of Study, K-2 from Lucy Calkins. Has all the lessons and words to say. Great format!

I like Regie Routman's Writing Essentials from Heinemann. It includes a DVD of writing conferences--hooray for models!!

Linda Dorn's Scaffolding Young Writers is quite good--focuses on little guys. The Units of Study are great, but the price might give you sticker shock.
