I want to do something with our students for her, but all I can think of is making cards or buying one large card and all of us signing. Any other ideas?

My grandmother died while I was interning and my cooperating teacher had the kids make me cards. The cards were sympathetic but made me laugh at the same time. I kept them and occasionally look at them, even now. They made me feel a little better, knowing that my cooperating teacher cared, and that the students did too.

When my Dad died, a wonderful Special Ed aide in my class had my students make me a bouquet of constrction paper flowers. They were flower petals cut out and layered bigger to smaller for eahc child's flower. They had a chenille stem poked through and knowted. The kids wrote messages on the petals and presented them all in a terra cotta pot that had sand in it to hold the stems up. It was so colorful, sweet and child-like. I still have that in my room many years later as a very sweet memory of those kids and that thoughful aide.

I looked at your profile and see that you teach OLDER kids.

Have them make a class list of "Reasons Your Dad Was Proud of You."
Base it on what she's done in the classroom with the students. Focus on her positive character traits.

You can go mushy and sincere, or make it a little funny like a David Letterman's Top Ten List (but still sweet) Ex: You haven't been seen in the hall with toilet paper stuck to your shoe. Car tires still full of air at the end of the day means it's okay with us if you come back.

Any gesture will be appreciated.
