I am using the new Saxon Math edition for 4th grade, but am wondering how others of you are getting all of your students to get the lesson done with corrections each day? Half of my students are having a very difficult time transferring the problems onto paper from the book. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How long do you give your students to do their math?

Saxon 5/4 copyright 2004. I assume yours is similar. I model a lot the first 10 lessons. We use the checker board paper, so each problem has it's own box (the blackline for it is in my TE workbook). To grade, the kids each have a highlighter and a red pen. If the problem is all wrong they highlight the number of the problem, if they forget a label or second step I sometimes give 1/2 credit, they write -1/2 with their red pen in those boxes. Hope that helps.

For 2nd Post: At first I give about 20 min. At this time of year, 10 to 15 min. to get started and the rest is homework.

the 2004 Saxon 5/4 edition like the previous poster. I have gone through and copied all the math problems, patterns, etc. onto the grid paper provided in the teacher edition workbook. At the beginning of the year, I copy labels, etc. However, as the year goes on, I copy less and less. I have found that this allows the students to focus on solving the problems instead of worrying about copying them correctly. Hope this helps!

Do you have problems with parents/guardians not understanding how to do the problems, so students don't complete those particular ones? Do you get all homework back? If not, what do you do? Do you put all grades in the gradebook?

I'm so glad we use the alternative fourth grade Saxon. It helps so much to do side A in class and then assign side B as homework.

My students worked slower at the beginning of the year as well. And they always have difficulty transferring from the worksheets in 3rd to the text/Saxon-paper in 4th. But they eventually get it. My students now take about 1 minute per problem. They complete 1-15 in the morning, I grade those, then they do 16-30 as homework. The next day, they correct all 30 problems in class.

-I know that in our textbook, under each numbered problem there is a small number in parentheses. This number refers to the lesson that the topic was introduced. I periodically remind my students of this and also remind my parents in newsletters.

-I collect homework every day. I check it off as students hand it in. If they do not have it completed on have it to hand in, they lose a special time (P.E., Art, etc.).

-We grade homework everyday as a class. Once a week, I collect the papers and put the grade in. This is random though, so students do not know which day it will happen. Hope this helps!

Saxon workbooks

When I used the 5/4 2004 edition, we purchased the optional student workbooks. This was great because there were worksheets for each lesson where it gave a designated area for each problem, it had the problem, and sometimes it gave the kids clues as to how to solve the problem.

I now use the Saxon 4 worksheet alternative edition (instead of the book) and love how we do A in class and then they do B at home. A models B wonderfully. Also, it is MUCH easier and quicker to grade. Additionally, it is much more manipulative based than the book.

Hope this helps!
