After reading another post, I am curious about everyone's planning periods...how often? how long? I have one every day from 9:30-10:15 and another on 3 days from 10:30-11:15. How about everyone else???
for the first time in five years. It is 50 minutes daily but luckily it is attached to my 25 minute lunch. I tend to mingle them together as also eat lunch in my room.
We have a 'duty free' lunch time so we get 30 min to eat, then 30 min prep daily. That is if we are not asked to cover a para's duty. We then have 40 min. 3x a week.
I just switched schools and got very lucky with the planning periods....I get a planning period/lunch from 10:50-12:10 everyday....at the end of day I also get one for 50 minutes.
we get 45 minutes a day, but one of the planning periods is used for a PLC meeting each week. I have recess duty that day so there's really only 20 minutes of time w/o kids (lunch) and it always feels so hectic!
It's always interesting to see how different schools/states/districts operate!
We get 300 minutes a week. It's randomly split though, so some days I only have 30 minutes, other days I have 90 minutes. We also have a duty free lunch that is 35 minutes.
I can't stand when my prep period is the first period of the day - I have the kids for 15 minutes, then they're gone for 30 or 45 minutes and then I have them for the rest of the day... makes for a long day!
I get an hour twice a week(if they don't schedule some kind of training during that time and they usually do.) I have duty free lunch (20 min.) three days a week.(unless the lunch monitors are absent)
Wow, how can you have daily planning time for that long? We only get 40min. 3x's a week! Seriously, how long is your school day? You are all so lucky!!
I would love to have more planning time. It seems like we get less and less every year. This year I have a 50 minute planning 4 days a week. However, out of those four days 1 day a week we have to meet with our academic coach, 1 day a week we have to have a grade level meeting, and one day a week we have RTI meetings. We really only have 1 day to actually work.
WOW!! Do you guys know how fortunate you are? EVERY Day I must eat (if you can call it that) among the children. Title I school. Duty-free lunch?? Ha!! That NEVER happens. On top of that, our silly P has installed 2 clacker-trackers (those insane traffic lights) on each side of the lunchroom. IF one goes to red, then there's $Y%*Y) to pay. These devices were meant for classroom use (though I'd NEVER use one). You can imagine the echoing that goes on in a lunchroom with approx. 100+ kids in it at a time. The lights are always going to red. INSANE....
Oh, sorry...this post was about planning periods. Again, do many of you realize how FORTUNATE you are?? I have 25 min. 4 days a week. One day of week, that's taken up by grade-level/data meetings. My planning is always done on my own time...or it would never get done. I'd LOVE to have even 45 uninterrupted minutes per day....
I have an hour planning time each day while my kids are in PE/music. I get a 30 minute duty free lunch. I have 30 minutes off once a week while my kids are in library. I also get 30 minutes off every other week while my kids are in counseling. The library and counseling backs up to my PE/music so I basically get an hour and a half break those days. My team has worked out a recess duty schedule. We have recess for 20 minutes 5 days a week. There are 5 of us. 3 are on duty outside, 1 has study hall, and 1 has off.
We get 40 minutes a day for personal plan time. We also get a 50 minute art time every 6th day. On Wednesdays, we have team plan for 40 minutes. It's usually PLC time. I thought we had a lot of plan time, but I can't imagine some of you who have an hour and a half a day.
Two times a week--45 minutes.
Two times a week==30 minutes.
Both are during our 'specials' (gym and music). Then a daily 'duty free' lunch and a 20 minute 'common planning' time (that is usually taken up with meetings).
So, altogether on paper--400 minutes a week, but is really more like 300 once all the meetings have been accounted for.
Wow, I used to think I had it good with 40 minutes a day (I've taught before where I had NO prep time at all, and also where I had 25-30 minutes a day). How long is your school day? How many minutes of instructional time with your students do you have? Planning time is nice but you also need enough time with your students so you can teach. The irony is the more you teach the more planning time you need (and vice versa) but the exact opposite is probably what happens.
I get 45 minutes 5 days a week (1:00-1:45) but Thursdays are always team planning day.
It is very interesting to read all about the differences in prep times.
I also thought everyone was supposed to have a 30m duty free lunch. Maybe it is just the state I am in...but I thought it was a law?
I get a 40 minute planning period every day from 11:05-11:45 with all of the other K teachers at my school. We plan together on Mondays and Tuesdays each week during that time for the next week so that we do not have to do any afterschool planning other than basic housekeeping. Once or twice a month we have technology training or a DATA meeting with the admin. during this time. The rest of the day I have my kids - no duty free lunches or duty free recess in any of the counties around me.
I teach three grades. I eat lunch with my students in our classroom Monday through Thursday (although today I worked on grading papers and ate later). Fridays we eat together as a school--there's a teacher table, but sometimes a couple students eat with us. I go to morning recess every day--I do like to play . Right after lunch someone proctors my class with a science video and takes my class to recess and I go teach 4-6 language. Planning period? I guess you can count the 30 min on Fridays when my class goes to music. That's it.
During the student school day I get 30 minutes planning and 30 minutes duty free lunch everyday. Then after the student day ends at 2 we get an hour for planning/meetings/conferences.
We have a 40 minute prep time twice a week. Lunch and recess are both duty-free. We're supposed to prep 30 minutes before school (never happens) and and hour after school, when we're not having meetings. We do have duty before and after school every couple of weeks for a week at a time.
Our elementary school get two 50 minute preps a week. Our district wants to reduce expenses and eliminate preps. Then, I say reduce the student contact time by 110 minutes!
We have meetings during all planning times and eat lunch with our children. I always wonder why we don't get a 'break' like the government says we should but it isn't worth the headache to ask...
those of you who don't get planning time, or get very little.
I am not in the US or Canada. I have recess duty 1X per week and lunch duty 1X also, so the other 4 days I have 20 minutes (recess) and 35 minutes (lunch) per day to plan. I also basically have about 2 planning periods per day (periods are about 35 minutes) so I estimate that I get an hour apart from my recess and lunch. I'm lucky that one of my planning periods occurs after my lunch so I eat quickly at my desk and try to maximize the time. Very rarely do I have a meeting during my planning.
I think it is a crime not to have any planning time or just 40 minutes a week- I can't imagine that at all
I am shocked at how many of you do not have duty-free lunches!!!! I would be very unhappy if I had to eat lunch with my students. Don't get me wrong, I love them and all....but I also love that quiet time mid-day to reenergize for the rest of the day!
We have 35 minute specials 4 times per week and a 30 minute duty free lunch.
