A K teacher asked me to sit with a group of kids and show them how to recognize 7 with their fingers w/o starting from 1. I guess she meant that they should know one hand is 5 and count up from that to 7? Is this something that you teach to k kids? TIA

That sounds right. I think it's appropriate--it's helping to teach addition using the count on method. Lots of kids see a problem like 5 plus 2 and have to count out 5 fingers, then two fingers, then start over and count them all again. Getting them to realize that they can count on from the first number up to to answer is an important step.

My school just adopted HM Math Expressions. This is our first year, but I love it (side note ) Anyway, one thing that we start on day 1 is a game called Random Fingers. The kids put their hands behind their back...I say a number and they "show me" with their fingers. We played the first part of the first unit is numbers 5 and less...then we added that other hand. Now we are talking about 6 being 5 and 1..and 8 being 5 and 3...etc.

Anyway, my point is that I teach 1st and from what I have heard in my trainings this is something they introduce and work on in kdg. So, I would agree with the PP that the skill is appropriate in kdg.

Random Fingers is a fun game (my students think so anyway) if you think it would work with them.
