Publishing Class Book
Old 11-03-2009, 02:47 PM

Our second grade team has decided to publish class books again this year. I am needing suggestions for a theme. It needs to be pretty simplistic as my class of 17 is very low this year (over 65% below level, with 6 in speech for oral and written expression difficulties). Last year I did "What I want to be when I grow up". Other sections have done ABC Christmas, Mammals, Idioms. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....as I am on tired brain mode!

following the model of Margaret Wise Brown in The Important Book? Your theme could be school and each child could share what they believe to be important about school.

When I was Little

I have had my students use the book, "When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth" by Jamie Lee Curtis as a springboard for a class book. The book features different scenarios told by a child about how much she's grown and become independent since she was "little" just a few years before. It's so cute to see what the children write about themselves...what's important to them and what they notice about how they've grown and changed in just a few years. Each child writes a page with a picture (before or after, or a split picture of both) and we put it into a big book.

I posted this a few days ago for someone looking for class book ideas.
we read the book A Porcupine Named Fluffy. Then each student wrote about an animal with the opposite characteristics of what it should had. We modeled after that book. It was REALLY hard - but in the end they were great.
There is a book I'm not sure the title - something like What Snowmen do at night. I have done an art project with it before - but you could probably add writing to it also. There is also a book the 12 days of Winter - maybe you could do something with that.
Here are some others we have done over the years (not winter related) - our versions of these
Fortunately, Unfortunately
Q is For Duck
A House is a House for Me
Last Night at the Zoo
The Important book
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Horton Hatches the Egg (let students draw 2 halves of different animals, rename it and write about it - got that idea from another teacher - maybe on this site)
This is Not a Box (we do stick)
What Can You Do with a Shoe (we do umbrella)
Things that are the Most
Animals Should Definetely Not Wear Clothing
Let us know what you decide and how they turn out! I am always looking for new ideas too!

a quick book idea that we did in the beginning of the year--We read the book "Giving the Dog a Bath and other things that make me happy". Students then had to write what made them happy. Easy and turned out great!
