I'm getting observed next week and the lesson I will be teaching is Author's message. I'm looking for some creative twists I can add to my lesson, which may be more engaging for my 4th grade students. I teach a GT class, so challenging ideas are welcomed.

I found a lesson in the archives where you assign students to each write on a topic. They actually brought in donuts for the kids to eat. That might not be agood idea for an evaluation, but the kids then wrote something about donuts-persuade, inform, and entertain. You could pick a different topic. I also have a few powerpoint items on my website that could be used as practice with the kids. Each slide has short stories that the kids practice identifying the author's purpose. Here is the link
