I have to teach syllables next week? And I can not for the life of me think of an interesting way to teach syllables other than clapping them out! I really could use any idea!

You might try clapping them out: use the kids' names and work as a whole class.

You can have them make a graph using their names and syllable numbers. Then they can fill in the empty graph with some words they think of with a partner to match each syllable number column. Probably 3 syllables would be tops for filling in with words they come think of.

You could also have them categorize spelling words if they have enough syllables to be a challenge.

I like to use Hickety Pickety Poem
Hickety Pickety Bumble Bee,
Can you say this word with me?
Now lets spell it.
Now lets clap it.
Now lets stomp it.
Now lets shout it.
Now lets whisper it.

You can use names, spelling words, etc. I use it mainly to teach our character word of the week...honesty, responsibility, etc. You can add different motions too like now lets punch it, kick it, wiggle it, flea clap it (use just two fingers to clap).
