Aide has other things to do-vent

I know my aide is going on vacation. I knew that the she was looking at motels on her computer during the morning before the class came in. I was annoyed but thought she will start working when school starts. At 1:30 she says "DONE!" "found it!". I realized she had left all of the copying until the end of the day and had been looking for motels during the time she should have been copying! Does she have work ethic? Could I just search on the computer instead of teach? I didn't think I had to look over her shoulder and monitor her computer time!

Contact her supervisor and document what she is doing. She should not be doing this during the workday!

Last year I worked with a teacher who looked at bridesmaid dresses online (she was getting married) while I monitored her class. She was surprised when she was denied tenure. She of course did other things too that caused her not be given tenure but the online searching during class time irritated me the most.

My aide does the same thing! She has a side business selling lotions or something and she spends most of the days online dealing with that! Both the principal and I have spoken to her about it but nothing has been done.

Discuss this with her first...

Don't contact her supervisor until you have explained to her that her actions are inappropriate. Maybe this is a one time thing, or maybe she doesn't know it's wrong. Never go to the supervisor without talking to her first. You wouldn't want a parent running to your principal without talking to you first, so don't do it to others.

Today we had an in service day and my aide did very little of what I asked her to do. She made a big deal about the one project I asked her to do (oh boo hoo, I asked her to WORK while I was in a meeting all morning). I asked her to do another project in the afternoon and she just sat in front of her computer. I asked her again and eventually she got up and did something completely different from what I asked! I assumed she was working on what I gave her to do but she was not. What makes it hard is that she thinks she is working so hard but I think that if she doesn't know what to do she should either a) do what I asked or b) ask what else she can do. She goes on and on about her previous teacher and I think she wants me to do things the other teacher's way.

I talked to another aide who told me she really wants to work with me (she is unhappy with the teacher she works for as this teacher is always very stressed out). I would love to work with this aide! Should I talk to the principal about it for next year?

I'd talk to the principal and see if there's any way the aides could be switched now. Explain to your principal that things just aren't working out between you and your para. Document the events you just mentioned here. If you can get the other para to go in with you, your principal might be happy to provide a better working environment for you both. Para changes have been made in my school during the schoolyear. It's worth a shot.

I had an aide that had worked for a teacher for 25 years! Due to the teachers illness (Alzhimers), the aide did most of the teaching for about 5 years. The I came along. This aide actually went to the principal to complain that she might as well leave because there was nothing for her to do. She also said a lot of other garbageabout me that was not true. The principal bought it all because the aide had been there for so long. I left the job because of the principal. Cannot work for someone like that.

Your aide has her own computer? Maybe it needs to be yanked.

I wish! When her computer wasn't working she would go over to her former teacher's room and use hers.

At least she shows up at work. My aide has missed 20 or more days of school already and usually she calls in at the last minute so it's hard to find a sub. I have been by myself with 18 pre-k kids for 2 1/2 days this week. And she doesn't do much when she is here so I know how you feel.
