aide scheduled, but never shows

Do any of you have this problem, or is it just at my site? On paper, I have an aide for one hour each day to help my students with fluency, yet this person has only appeared 3 times since the start of school. He brought in all of his materials. I gave him a place to keep them, yet he never comes to class. I notice that he is listed on the absent list quite often. I know that sometimes my prince will coopt the aides for "special projects." I am afraid to say anything to my principal because she will sometimes take things as if you are personally attacking her.

He's banking on the fact that you won't say anything. Aren't there other classes he's supposed to be helping in for the other hours of the day?
What I would do is call the office every time he's not there and have him paged. When you speak to the principal, your attitude will not be that SHE is wrong, but that you both know HE is wrong. He's being paid every day to do a job, he's not doing it, end of story.

I would speak directly to the aid before I went to the principal. Remind him that the school year is cranking up and your room is busy and you need him during his scheduled times. Hand him the schedule and highlight your section, or just write it down. If he doesn't show - THEN go the principal.

Why should lucky be responsible for reminding this man of his schedule? No one comes around and reminds me where I am supposed to be. It's my job to know that. I agree with having the man paged every time he doesn't show up. He is counting on you not saying anything about this.

This guy is counting on your silence. Imagine if you weren't where you were suppose to be. Why should he get paid for not doing his job? Where is he? What is he doing instead? HMMM...very interesting.

aides doing what they feel like

I am a member but chose to sign out just in case...

I am a resource teacher who creates schedules for two aides and they really are needed where I place them. They either just changed their own schedule or complained enough to the principal he changed it for them, mainly so they can all hang out in the other resource teacher's room, which is the "hangout room". This is where they claim there are four adults needed for four children (there is not), when they were clearly needed where I put them. They mainly play on the computer, eat, or do extra work for this resource teacher. The first two weeks of school I hounded them about following the schedule and actually didn't realize their schedule was changed until they had subs come to work for them, wondering what the h*ll they were supposed to do because the aides weren't actually where they were supposed to be. I then realized nobody backed me up (not even the regular ed teachers where they were supposed to be!) so I backed off. It was pretty much me the nosy witch chasing down aides all day when i should be doing my own job. Which was funny because the teacher's aide who worked for the "hangout room" teacher follwed her typewritten schedule to a t. I have issues about it, especially when it is affecting the students who should be getting the help, but when you have no backup it is very difficult. I basically get no respect from the aides or the "hangout room" resource teacher.

If the aide does not come to your room during his next scheduled time, call the office and ask if Mr. Aide is doing something for the principal. If he is not, ask him to be paged to your room. If he does not show up, I would ask him if there was a change to his schedule you were not aware of and remind him you really need him in there during his scheduled time to work with your students. If he continues to not show up after that, go to the principal. How can she think you are attacking her when you're just asking what's up with the aide?!?

I just found out today that i am supposed to have an aide (actually this is a 3rd set of hands in my room) during first period. They called my room today and asked if they could take him. I assured them I had no idea that he was supposed to be in there and that I had never seen him in my room not once the entire year but that I sure could use his help because when my regular classroom aide is not they are not very good about covering her. And i mentioned in a previous post she has missed many, many days this year.
