After students have had fact/opinion instruction, I have my students pair up. Each pair is assigned a section of whatever reading passage we're working with. As they reread, one partner is searching for facts, the other for opinions. When they find one, they write it down on a strip of paper. The partners confer with each other on their selections -to confirm or rethink. After that, there are a few choices (for example):
- have partners come up, one at a time, and read their facts/opinions; confirm with class,
and use strips to build a graphic organizer
-"fact" students meet as a group, and "opinion" students meet as a group to dicuss their
choices, eliminate any that do not fit and build their portion of the graphic organizer -
discuss whole group
-students mingle, meet with a classmate who is not their partner, read each other's
sentence and tell whether it is a fact or opinion, repeat for a couple minutes; save strips
for fact/opinion quizzes and games
