question re: grading 2nd grade worksheets

Hello Esteemed Professional Educators:

I am new to teaching elementary school (I got fast-tracked into this position from working with older learners) and am wondering: I hand worksheets back to 2nd graders to correct their mistakes. Is it wrong to record their grade AFTER they have corrected their mistakes instead of before? I especially consider doing this when grading worktexts covering new concepts, when it seems the students make a lot of mistakes.

Thanks so much!

Recording after corrections

Why not? I don't usually do it for worksheets. But my students who do poorly on exams are given the opportunity to retake the test after I have done some reteaching and they have had time to practice at home, and at school with a peer tutor. I usually record both scores because I'm interested in documenting student growth. I think it's a teacher discretion thing.

Worksheets that I give for practice I usually do not grade. I have them fix mistakes so I can see if they are gaining in their understanding.

With standards based grading, if a student shows they are gaining mastery toward a concept then their grade will reflect that. If they are understanding more by fixing mistakes, then by all means, regrade them!

I dont record number grades for worksheets, independent work, or homework. I use check, check minus, and check plus instead. They are required to correct their work. I only officially grade a few papers along the way after the material has been introduced several times and practiced.

Worksheets are formative - for practice. In my district, we only grade assessments. I do check their work and if they don't do well, I either send it home for a parent to go over with them, or I have them try again. It kind of depends if I think they really tried or just wrote any thing. Otherwise, how will they learn the concept?
