Relay for Life

Each year, my school has a Relay for Life team to raise money for the American Cancer Society. We are having a competition between grade levels this year to see who can raise the most money. I was wondering if anyone had any fundraising ideas or things that you have done in the past to raise money. The fundraiser can be something the kids participate in or the teachers participate it. One grade has already done a "pajama day" where the kids could pay $2 to wear pajamas to school. I am trying to think of another idea that could potentially raise some money, but am drawing a blank.... any ideas??

We do a penny war that is a huge hit every year...the winning class plays the teachers in a kickball game after school. Classes compete to bring in the most change- we usually raise around $1000. We count all money, but I've heard of schools counting the silver as negative, so classes put dimes, nickles and quarters in their competion's jars.

I am the committee chair at my school. Here are the ideas we have done in the past tp raise money:
  • PJ Days for a dollar
  • Hat Days for a dollar
  • Face Painting Fridays for fifty cents (we do these close to certain holidays such as halloween or st. patrick's day)
  • Nacho Ordinary Fridays- Sell nachos to kids/teachers for $2 (we do this about 3 times a year)
  • selling bake goods to teachers once a month
  • selling bake goods at PTO meetings
  • Around Easter- send home a plastic egg with child, child has to fill it up with change.
  • Penny wars- boys vs. girls (Pennies are positive and silver coins and bills are negative points) This is one of our biggest fundraisers.
  • Close to our Relay for Life Event, we through a mini-event for the kids. We charge $5 for the kids to participate in activities and games at our local high school across the street. We usually have a few moonwalks, face painting, carnival games. All materials are donated from partners in ed. and community leaders. For $10 the students get a t-shirt also. (This is our biggest funraiser)
  • Jean Days for $1 (our students wear uniforms, so once a month we charge for jeans. Each child who pays gets a sticker.)
  • Date Night for Parents - Parents pay $5. Teachers volunteer to watch kids from 6-9 while parents have a night off. We do math and reading games, movie and popcorn/drinks. All food items are donated.)
  • Guessing Jars for twenty five cents. We do this monthly. Right now, its quess the number of candy corns. Closest guesser recieves items in jar.
Hope these ideas help.

We have sold those pencils that smell for the last couple of years at our book fair. They are really popular! I don't know where to get them from but I'm sure they would be easy to find online. Good Luck! You're supporting a great cause.
