We use DIBELS in our elementary schools. When I was doing curriculum for all subjects I administered the test, disaggregated data, progress monitored, etc. I'm not a really big fan of DIBELS. You can go to their website and find some information without a login. Good luck!

DIBELS Equals YUCK....My humble opinion.

WHO, I ask you, WHO in this world thinks reading at lightning speed is a good way to "help" kids become more fluent? I don't. It's ridiculous, not to mention that the passages are not graduated. One week, a kid may be soaring...only to have a low score the next...Makes no sense...

What to say to a parent about Dibels?

I am tutoring a 2nd grader who is a bit behind in reading. The parent showed me the most recent report and it shows the reader that this student is in the middle, not at grade level. What would your advice be to this parent? (i.e. take this as a grain of salt, etc.)

Most people don't understand how to use DIBLES. It's designed as a progress monitoring tool just like AIMSweb is a progress monitoring tool. It is not some thing you teach. I've seem some teacher try to teach the DIBLES probes, which you should never do. You will need to understand the data you get from DIBLES for RTI purposes and it's good reading data. Each reading probe is a snapshot of the students performance. You need to have a breadth of data to get a good picture of the reading performance. They are timed because they are probes, not to see how fast a student can go. The probes are quick and easy so you can do other things. I'm curious as to what you learn in training.
