Somebody Wanted But So Then

We hold up our hand and each finger gets a name starting at the thumb. Somebody, wanted, but, so, then. Name the somebody in the story.
Ex.
Goldilocks wanted to explore the bear's house but she ended up breaking things so she went to bed then got scared when the bears found her.

This works well when they are trying to summarize a story. If they are looking for the best summary, I teach BME! (like be me!) The children are trying to find the best sentence that happened in the beginning, the middle and the end of the story. I have them read the answer choices and decide if each sentence in the answer choice happened at the beg/mid/end. They write B, M or E by each sentence in the answer choice. The answer choice that has BME written by it is the correct answer. Others will have M/M/E, M/B/E or B/M/M or something like that.

I hope either of these work for you.

Has anyone ever tried the SWBST method with teaching kids to write a summary paragraph?

It sounds to me (I could be wrong-never taught SWBST) that the SWBST works more for a 1 sentence summary. Am I seeing this correctly?

Can I use it to teach a summary paragraph? Any suggestions?

Our state test requires students to write a summary paragraph.

As well, the DRA2 tests require a longer summary...in fact the DRA summaries are more like retells, in that the more they write, the higher they score.

Would the SWBST method work with either of these? If so, can you share how you do it? I would REALLY appreciate it.

I use somebody, wanted, but, so, then, finally as an outline. They then use the outline to create a summary paragraph. When writing the paragraph they must add more details to what they wrote on the outline.
