I have a little 2nd grader boy who is already in trouble for hitting another boy. So the 2 boys b/c they are both in trouble have to sit down by our principals office during recess. Well the one of the other teachers happened to be walking by the office and caught this boy saying i'm going to get a knife and stab this other person and twist the knife. Of course our principal was gone yesterday. The thing is this boy is just now being tested for ADHD and he has depression. His mother has never really been able to control him. He is pretty good in class for me just very very talkative and can never really stay still. Anyways we just brought him back to the classroom and made him set in there with his head down till today when our principal gets back. What do you do when a child says this. I've never had this happen. Do we need to suspend him?? I hope any of this makes sense..

We take verbal threats seriously. The parent should be called in for a conference with the principal.

I most certainly think this warrants a suspension. However, if they are testing him for special ed they will probably excuse the behavior as part of the disabillity. I dont think with recent history these types of physical threats can be dismissed as childish jibberish. Would your school counselor be able to spend some time each week with him. It appears he would benefit from some anger management strategies. Best of Luck.

A boy said something along these lines, "I'm going to get a knife..."

We contacted the parents right away. The boy was removed from the classroom for a good protion of the morning.

We haven't had many problems since, he is just very impulsive.

We would be contacting her and he would be suspended for those comments. I am past caring that these types of comments are "just what they hear on games/tv, etc." too bad! it's not appropriate and has nothing to do with his adhd---the depression, yes. He should be seeing a counselor.
